Jul 01 : "Guard Stick" - Golden Apples (Philly)

Philly Music!

Friday night I went to Ortlieb's and saw Philly band Golden Apples, playing to a packed house. It was my first time seeing them.

Here's a sample of some of their music. This is "Guard Stick" from their 2023 album "Bananasugarfire" :::

Golden Apples has a couple more shows coming up, on July 10 at White Eagle Hall and on August 14 at PhilaMOCA. In the meantime, here is the click to their Bandcamp page ::: Golden Apples on Bandcamp (CLICK HERE). (pic above is from band's Bandcamp page)

(I was lucky to see any of their show. After some SEPTA bus cancellations, I got to the show just in time for the band's last two songs.)

Jun 17 : "I'm Starting a Podcast" - Tea Eater (Brooklyn)

Is this a band? Or a comedy act? Something else? A few weeks ago I went to Silk City and saw art-punk outfit "Tea Eater". They're a three-piece from Brooklyn.

The band performs a variety of songs with over-the-top lyrics along with some outrageous stage props. Near the beginning of the show they asked us to imagine what it would be like if we were suddenly reincarnated as a "Little White Dog (in a Gated Community)". They sang about waffles, selling cars, "Fuck the DMV", and even wanted to start a podcast. Here is "I'm Starting A Podcast", a single released in July 2022 :::

Many of the songs are personal to lead singer, Tara Thiessen, who says in reference to the band's album, "I Don't Believe in Bad Luck", I Don’t Believe in Bad Luck, is the story of a hotline psychic who’s sick of everyone—including herself. Based on my own personal experiences as an online tarot card reader and exploration in meditation, occult studies, and the Gateway Tapes, the record explores my shadow self and what it means to be the villain in someone else’s story. With some self-aware humor baked into the songs, the record recontextualizes messy experiences, and shows how even the most chaotic holes we fall into can lead to the best possible outcomes.. Here is "The Waffle Song", which is the fourth track on that album :::

The most over-the-top moment at the show was when they started singing about "butter", They moved away from the stage and into the midst of the audience, as they brought out a huge stick-of-butter stage prop which they held like a limbo pole and invited audience members to come dance underneath.

Tea Eater has another show coming up on August 24th at TV Eye. And, in the meantime, to visit the band on Facebook, here is the click ::: Tea Eater on Facebook (CLICK HERE)

Jun 03 : "leave me the fuck alone" - Cowboygirl (Brooklyn)

I saw Brooklyn band "Cowboygirl" on my recent trip to Berlin Under A. They did a great show. Loud and intense, multiple instruments including BRASS.

Here is "leave me the fuck alone", second track on their 2023 album "give the dog a bone" :::

Stylings are a little bumpy in the best way. Here is a short video live excerpt from their Instagram page ::: Cowboygirl video clip. May 20 : "Day In Day Out" - Mars Rodriguez (New York)

On my recent trip to Berlin Under A, I saw New York artist Mars Rodriguez do a show. She's a solo performer, all instruments blended into her one performance. A multi-talanted artist, here is the description from her Bandcamp page : MARS RODRIGUEZ is a Nicaraguan - American singer, songwriter, producer and a one person band: vocals, guitar, keyboard and digital drums/ drum machine. Her music incorporates elements from post punk, blues, indie rock. pop and electronic music.

Her instrumentals have very strong bass lines that operate as a foundation for the tension in her vocals. Here is "Day In Day Out", which is the seventh track on her most recent album, "Manana Nobody Knows" :::

The album has eleven tracks altogether, two of which are instrumentals. Here is one of them,"Raw Pwr". No need for vocals here; the instrumentals speak for themselves. We start off with the full raw pwr, putting on an aggressive front, but then the curtains are pulled back a little as the clock hits 2:44. Slightly more relaxed but still an agitated undercurrent. We take a look behind the scenes at some background elements. About 4:00 the song then switches back to its more aggressive mode, but this time including some of the underlying qualities that we heard in the previous segment, that we see are now seeing as components of raw pwr :::

Mars Rodriguez has another show coming up on July 31 at Alphaville. In the meantime here is the click to her Facebook page ::: Mars Rodriguez on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

May 13 : "Smoke" - Office Hours (Brooklyn)

I recently went to Berlin Under A one night after work and saw Brooklyn "noisegaze" band Office Hours. I liked their show; it was my first time seeing them.

Their self-description on their Facebook page says Office Hours is a post-punk/indie rock band based in Brooklyn, who have recently escaped Orlando, FL. Now, they repent for their home state with loud guitar sound therapy that helps heal their audience.

And, yes, they kept their promise. We got very loud guitars at the show at Berlin, almost blasting us away! :) At the show, they were operating in their more "indie + punk" persona.

But if you take a look at the music they have posted on Bandcamp, you'll see a wide range of styles. On their linktr.ee page, they describe themseles as being a "noisegaze" band, and that more aptly describes their latest work on Bandcamp, which is the 2025 album "China Latino", which is quite shoegaze! Here is their song, "Smoke" which is from that album, "Chino Latino" :::

And get ready for a jolt! You won't believe it's the same band. Traveling a few years back, we find a much more mellow vibe in their 2019 album, Late Night Korean BBQ. Here is the song "Car" from "Late Night Korean BBQ" :::

Office Hours has another show coming up on June 11 at Wonderville. In the meantime, here is the link to their Facebook page ::: Office Hours on Facebook (CLICK HERE) and to Bandcamp ::: Office Hours on Bandcamp (CLICK HERE).

May 06 : "What Is/What Is Not" - Fleet (New York)

After work on Thursday night I headed over to Bushwick and saw New York band "Fleet" play at Alphaville. They are a four-piece and are named after the band's mastermind, Anna Grace Fleet. This was my first time seeing them.

I was immediately impressed with the band's stage presence and the way Anna related to the audience. She drew us in at the start of each song by making a few comments and throwing the topic out to the audience about whether we had experienced anything similar. Ever feel indifferent about something, unable to see it one way or another? Ever go to a place with a dramatic climate change? The audience members shouted back, fully engaged on each theme. Free-flowing exchanges that enveloped the audience in a way greater than what we usually see.

So right now we're in a relationship whose longevity seems to be a little dicey. We want it to last but how are we going to handle it? What are we going to do? What are we going to say? Here is "What Is / What Is Not" which was released in the summer of 2025. What are we going to say? :::

Fleet doesn't have any other shows coming up in the next couple weeks, but here is the link to their Instagram page where you can keep watch: Fleet on Instagram (CLICK HERE).

In addition to her musical endeavors, Anna did a short video titled "Wage Gap" about pay inequalities between women and men. This is from 2017.

Mar 11 : Mother Hubbard (Jersey City)

VERY HIGH RECOMMENDATION TO GO SEE THESE PEOPLE! >>> A couple weeks ago I heard Mother Hubbard play at Milkboy. It was my first time hearing them. I was blown away. It's very rare that I like every song a band plays during a show. They are a rock band which was a four-piece at Milkboy that night. (even included a trumpet, which I liked).

I usually post a pic of the band in my writeups. In looking at their pics on line, it seems that they have a fluid list of personnel. While they were a fourpiece at Milkboy, some of their shows feature a much larger lineup. (For their pic at the top of this writeup, I tried to include one that showed as many members as possible, so everyone would be shown, even if every person didn't play at each show).

I'm not posting any music sample here, as the only music I could find on line wasn't representative of what they sound like now. They did a great show at Milkboy; I'd urge you to go see them if you can. Stage presence was way more evolved than what we see in their online videos. Tempos were generally faster-paced.

At the Milkboy show the band played much of their own music but also did a cover of The Beatles' song "Drive My Car", which proved to be stiff competition for the original.

Mother Hubbard doesn't have any other shows coming up in the near future, but here is a click to their Facebook page where you can keep up with what's going on ::: Mother Hubbard on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

Feb 04 : "Break the Cycle" - The Green Wheel (Philly)

I went to The Pouch over the weekend and saw "The Green Wheel". Third visit to The Pouch; first visit to The Green Wheel. As the band was setting up, it seemed like they were drawing in some additional musicians from the audience, who wound up singing as a side "chorus" in the first songs. This was my first time seeing the band; not sure who was a regular member of the group, and who was added in on an impromptu basis. Wound up seeing only a part of their show.

The band has a sole Bandcamp offering, which happens to be quite good. Its title is "Break the Cycle" :::

Here's the band's description of the work. This song calls for a systemic reset, affordable homes, and particularly freedom from the student or medical debt peonage in which so many are trapped today. "Break The Cycle" is not just a certified banger but a call to action, demanding a full system reset, rolling jubilee, forgiveness of debts and an end to artificial scarcity and profiteering off of the suffering of others.

"The Green Wheel" is also known as "Baylor". Here is the link to their web page ::: The Green Wheel / Baylor web page (CLICK HERE), and here is the click to Instagram ::: Baylor on Instagram (CLICK HERE). (pic is from artist's Bandcamp page)

Seems like I can't do any music writeup these days without somehow dragging SEPTA in as a significant element of the evening. So yes I did see part, but not all of The Green Wheel's show. Had to leave earlier than I wanted; late-night connections aren't the best. I didn't want to get stuck in that night's ten-degree weather. The Green Wheel played later than originally planned; lineup was jumbled from what was originally advertised, and the whole evening got a late start due to some bad cables. I will have to check out the band again.

Jan 28 : "Loyalty and Blame" - Heliocentric Overdrive (Philly)

SEPTA got me there in time for the last couple songs. A couple weeks ago I went to Ortlieb's to see Heliocentric Overdrive. The band is one of frontman Tom Lugo's creations. All of his outfits are under the umbrella of his production company, Patetico Recordings. Over many years I've been to shows of his various projects, but Jan 16 at Ortlieb's looked like it drew the biggest crowd yet!

In the final song, making sure the we were all fully immersed in the music, Tom jumped down off the stage and played his guitar moving around through the audience. He increased the intensity as the audience applauded. His background in athletics and martial arts gave him the agility to do more moves than we see in others who try to do the same thing.

The music was also more tight than when I saw them last.

Here is a sample of their latest work. The song is "Loyalty and Blame", and was released over the summer :::

Heliocentric Overdrive doesn't have any other shows coming up soon, but here is the click to their Facebook page where can find out what's next ::: Heliocentric Overdrive on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

Dec 17 : "Panglossian Mannequin" - Guerilla Toss (New York)

New Music / Freshly Written and Recently Released

ROUGH TERRAIN

It's rough terrain riding over the song structures of New York band Guerilla Toss. Lots of bumps in the road, quick changes in tempo, volume, vocal styles, as Guerilla Toss is pulling us along at a rapid speed. We can't imagine what will happen next.

I went to hear Guerilla Toss at Johnny Brenda's back in October (not up-to-date in my writeups). They were headlining the evening. They gave a strong performance, although a lot of the nuances and subtleties of the stylistic changes found in the recordings did not carry over to the live show.

The band released a new album in September, "You're Weird Now". Here is "Panglossian Mannequin", which I think best exemplifies the fast changes. It's the sixth track on the album :::

Dec 03 : "Desertenko" - Special World (Philly)

Philly Music

Maybe it's time to start looking at Philly band "Special World" as being TWO bands. There's the "original" (at least from my perspective) Special World that lives on Bandcamp. A lot of this music, while in different styles, could be considered to be more laid back.

Then there's what's emerging at the live shows which is more forceful and intense. They've even upped this since their Cambridge Hall show back in August. I most recently saw them at Johnny Brenda's in October (yes, I'm way behind in my music posts). They had expanded to five members. In the Bandcamp world, the vocals are largely leading the way. But at the Johnny Brenda's show, there were not only the more powerful drums which I had heard at Cambridge Hall, but along with a focus on the bass, a foundation of powerful chords that carried the songs and almost became the songs, and then providing the support for the vocals. Even though they performed a lot of the same music that is on Bandcamp, the Johnny Brenda's presentation brought forward a feeling of strength or confidence that doesn't appear in the laid-back Bandcamp stylings.

But here, going back to a sample from the Bandcamp stylings, is "Desertenko", which is the fifth track on their album "Special World" :::

Special World has another show coming up on December 20 at Living Rune". And they've got a new website ::: SPECIAL WORLD NEW WEBSITE (Click here). In the meantime, here is the click to their Facebook page ::: Special World on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

Sep 17 : "The Future" - Sh'Bang (Philly)

Philly Music!

Another band I saw for the first time on my trip to The Pouch a couple weeks ago was Philly alt-punk band "Sh'Bang". I liked their show. They topped off the evening's great music with the most powerful show of the night.

Their July 2024 EP, "Explosive Personality", is aptly named. The song "The Future" shows a piercing introspection on life now but leaves us unsure as to whether life will be better in the future. And they ask when is the future. "The Future" is the third track on "Explosive Personality". Still powerful, but more textured than at the show. Great guitar work throughout this track; I like the guitar solo starting around 2:29 on the clock and listen as it becomes more intense up through 2:52 :::

Sh'Bang doesn't have any more shows coming up soon in Philly, but you can get more info on their Facebook page ::: Sh'Bang on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

Sep 10 : "Hungry Mutt" - Slitopia - (Galway, IE)

New Music / Freshly Written and Recently Released (Sep 5)

Had a great evening at The Pouch on Friday night, a full night of music. One outfit playing was "Slitopia", originally from New Zealand and now from Galway, Ireland. This night was partly a release party for their new album, "Volume One".

The band, saying they make "alternative dance music", is an elecronic music duo, Evelyn Fletcher-Jenkins and Sophie Sutherland. The show also happened to coincide with Evie's birthday, so she was given a cake! Here is "Hungry Mutt", the third track on that newly-released album :::

I liked their show. Here is the click to their Bandcamp page: Slitopia on Bancamp (CLICK HERE) and their Facebook page Slieopia on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

Aug 27 : "Big Apple, 3am" - Special World (Philly)

New Music / Freshly Written and Recently Relased (May 1)

Philly Music!

A WIDER FOUNDATION

Big changes in Special World's world. I went to see Special World at Cambridge Hall on Friday night. Big changes since I saw them last back in 2023. I'm saying I'm seeing "a wider foundation", and this I mean on a few different levels.

There are changes in the band's sound. When I saw the band back in 2023, I felt the music was loose and freewheeling, maybe some improvisaation, but at the time the band had only a couple tracks up on line and I admit I had a limited frame of reference. At Friday's show, in contrast, the music was tight, very tight. I also felt the music followed the composition of their songs closely to what we hear on line. It provided a basis or ground level which I couldn't really identify in the first show. In terms of performance, there was a hugely expanded set of keys Friday night.

There was also a stronger tonal foundation. At Cambridge Hall there was pounding bass and drums, which just weren't there at the previous show. I don't know how much this was a function of new composition, mixing, or just a difference in the equipment, or maybe all three.

There was also a wider foundation from the visual standpoint. At the 2023 show, Lot 49 Books had very generously stepped in to host the show when sudden rain predictions cancelled the outdoor show at another location, so the "stage" setting was a little constricted compared to the wide stage at Cambridge Hall. And, yes, their new keys and other equipment helped fill up the stage nicely. A broad and solid appearance.

And lastly I feel that, in looking at the new track, there is a wider foundation in terms of lyrics or content. When listening to some of the band's earlier work, I sometimes felt like I was eavesdropping on a relationship whose attributes I knew little about. In the new song "Big Apple, 3am", we're jolted out of the ethereal and made to focus more seriously on life, both outside and inside our selves. The band forwards the concept that complacency = complicity, and that, in looking for "malevolence", the answer might not be just with the actions of others, but, taking the first look, with our own failure to act.

Here is the new piece that's just been posted, "Big Apple, 3am" :::

Special World has another show coming up soon, on Friday, October 17th, at Johnny Brenda's. You can also keep an eye on what they're doing in the meantime, on Special World on Bandcamp (CLICK HERE), and on Special World on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

Aug 20 : "Out to Dry" - Droopies (Philly)

Philly Music!

ENDING, CONNECTING, OR BOTH

I did go to hear Philly shoegaze band "Droopies" play at Century. I'm always very busy and admittedly don't get to write about some of the shows after seeing them, so here is an update! Didn't see this show recently, but have still been thinking about it all along.

My major impression or takeaway of the Droopies' show at Century was that the band never stopped playing from the moment they went on stage right up to the time they left, that, even at the end of each song there was a musical interlude between every piece. I had never heard anything like this before, so many interludes in one show. So this show with its interludes was on my mind for a long time.

Fast forward to now when I started to go back and look at everything in more detail. When I now listen to the full pieces in the band's 2022 album, “Echoes Lightly”, I see that maybe those effects that I experienced at the show weren’t really interludes, because they also showed up even in the album as the way many of the songs wind down to a long conclusion.

I hadn’t been aware of this before I went to the show because, to decide what show to see that night, I just listened to the first halves of a number of the tracks and didn't listen all the way through to the last bars. So what I thought were interludes at the show might have been actual ending parts of the songs.

Having those frequent long wind-downs is very unusual and I wanted to know more about it, so I asked the band.

DROOPIES TOLD ME that there are a few reasons why they're doing this effect. It's partly a tribute to Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, as well as to Ronald Jones of The Flaming Lips. They're little bits and musical phrases that didn't become part of larger pieces, but are sometimes played in between the larger ones. They're also trying to experiment with the feeling of the flow of the total evening.

With an eye towards making the music more interesting at shows, another reason for doing the interludes or long wind-downs is that they're trying to experiment with lengthening their songs, maybe even integrating more small bits into the actual bodies of the songs as part of the process. Farther into the future they envision songs that might even be 15 minutes in length and that would feature every type of sound.

Here is the song "Out to Dry", which is the final track on "Echoes Lightly". With a long intro as well, I love the instrumentals in this, an intriguing combination of confidence and grandiose. To hear a sample of the long wind-down effect that I was talking about, notice what happens as the clock hits 4:25.

If you like what you hear and you want to see Droopies live, you're in luck! They'll be doing a show on Friday, October 3rd at Thunderbird Hall. They'll be playing with three other bands, and the whole thing is a charity event with all the proceeds going to Baitulmaal.

In the meantime you should also know that the band is working on a new album. Some of the music has already been recorded; a release date has not yet been picked. Jul 30 : "Who's Next?", "National Brotherhood Week" - Tom Lehrer

Sad to hear the news this week that Tom Lehrer had died. A great pianist and humorist, and way ahead of his time on many issues, his satirical songs lampooned many of the policital and societal issues of the day. Back in the 60's he was one of my favorites.

In the song "Who's Next?" he warned us about nuclear proliferation :::

And lampooning prejudice in "National Brotherhood Week" :::

All seems so ridiculous when he shows us the universality of prejudice.

Later in life Tom Lehrer did return from entertainment back into academia. "The Guardian" featured a very good piece on his life this week.

Jul 23 : "The Welcoming Committee" - "Ring Of Fire" - "Hotgrits" - Indoor Yves (Philly)

Philly Music!

Another artist who is versatile in a number of genres is Philly's own "Indoor Yves". I went to The Fallser Club over the weekend and saw his show.

His Bandcamp page shows quite a variety of styles in his work. One track that's quite unusual and striking is "The Welcoming Committee", which is the first track on his 2023 EP, "Indoor Fish" :::

And here he does his own take on the song "Ring Of Fire". His version is stiff competition for the originals :::

And dramatically changing gears again, here is "Hotgrits" :::

To find more music, check out Indoor Yves' Bandcamp page ::: Indoor Yves on Bandcamp (CLICK HERE), and his Facebook page ::: Indoor Yves on Facebook (CLICK HERE).

Here is the artist description off his Bandcamp page: "Somewhere J-walking in the great city of Philadelphia, Pa, crawling between cars and dive bars, and sticking his nose in old books, Indoor Yves developed a penchant for "extreme genre bending," indiscreet bass, psychedelia, synthesis, 70’s tube warmth, and overall chaos."

And chaos it certainly was on Friday night when I went to the show at The Fallser Club. Indoor Yves started off by himself playing some chords as a drummer slowly started to join in. But no particular songs and no other band members. After a little while another band member showed up and joined in. It seemed that some band members had emergencies that night. A fourth member later showed up who took the place of the original drummer. While they explained they normally have five members, they wound up with no more than four on Friday. This was my first time seeing the band.

I paid for my ticket well in advance and I had the expectation that the band would actually show up! As fate MIGHT have it, sure, everybody can have emergencies all at the same time, but it does seem far-fetched and a little unbelievable. I hope that Indoor Yves will fix any personnel issues that might need his attention.

Jul 09 : "Sick Summer" - Lady Lychee (New York)

What would you do?

Picture yourself on summer break. You develop a new romantic interest over the summer, but the summer person shows up unexpectedly as you reconnect with your partner and your regular life in the fall.

This is the scene that's set in New York artist Lady Lychee's song "Sick Summer". It's the opening track on her 2023 album, "Rockstar Cosplay". The album talks about relatiionships, some good and some not so good.

A brilliant album. Lyrics full of depth and nuance, and instrumentals showing a wide range of textures. In listening to "Sick Summer", we hear the song's main character talking in a matter-of-fact way about the summer break and to meeting a mysterious new love interest. As soon as she starts to talk about how intense her feelings have become, the instrumentals start backing her up with some forceful grunge and bass work. I like this transition about 1:26 on the clock. And then when the summer is over and she goes back to her regular life, the forcefullness of the instrumentals recedes, at about 2:43 on the clock. I like these sudden transitions and the way they're integrated with the story.

Nuanced deftly, as a lot of her work is (even when she's hitting with a sledgehammer), the work never brings up an end to the story itself. Maybe Lady Lychee leaves the end of the story to our imaginations. ... So what would you do?

Lady Lychee is a good story teller. Here is "Sick Summer" by Lady Lychee :::

Jul 02 : "All You Fascists Bound to Lose" and "Your Death" - Hena Punk (Bristol UK)

We're living in a time when we see a disturbing spread of fascism around the globe, not only with our own Trump regime but also in other countries as well. But this is not the first time that the world has faced something like this. Years ago musician Woody Guthrie wrote and sang about it, and his song "All You Fascists Bound to Lose" seems now more timely than ever. Bristol UK's musician Hena Punk is giving new life to the song by doing a cover.

Hena came to Philly and performed the song with a lot of original work back at the end of May. Bonk's Bar in Port Richmond was the scene and the first stop on his American tour, and, after doing shows in New York State and Connecticut, he circled back around and did another show at West Philly Porchfest. Great show at Bonk's. With good stage presence and excellent engagement, he talked back and forth with the audience in between songs.

Hena took us through an interesting show, telling stories and playing music, and, at some points inviting us to sing along. Here we are in Philly singing along with his cover of ::: "All You Fascists Bound to Lose" :::

I thought we did a fairly decent job singing along, but his people back home did a more robust rendition :::

And here is taking a look at some of Hena Punk's own work. This is one of the "spoken word" pieces on his site.

The video above, "Your Death", is a tribute to his deceased friend, Chris. Chris didn't have the fame for his name to be splashed all over major media to tell the value of his life, so this video is a tribute to their friendship because the world can almost stop turning when someone who is important in your life dies.

Jun 18 : "High Tide" - Babes In Canyon (Seattle)

OFFERING EVERYTHING

Last week I went to see Seattle band "Babes In Canyon" at Nikki Lopez. I had found some intriguing stylings in the music they have posted on line and I wanted to check out their show.

I've been especially liking their song "High Tide" which has moving lyrics along with some inventive instrumentals. Seems like the people in the song already know each other. We find the song's main character expressing and offering his love to the other mystery person in many ways, and he hopes that that someone will recognize and reciprocate. Is "high tide" symbolic of the depth of his feelings? The precariousness of a high tide? Or just being high?

Babes In Canyon is a duo from Seattle. One band member plays the synth, the other various alternating stringed instruments. I like the online music, well-balanced; sound mixing at the show had a little bit of a bumpy start.

But back to "High Tide". The song is the lead on the band's 2023 EP "Year to Live EP". A heartfelt declaration of love. :::

Babes In Canyon is still on tour, but they've already passed through Philly and New York. Here is the click to the band's Facebook page where you can keep up with any new releases and any new tours. ::: Babes In Canyon on Facebook (CLICK HERE).
