THE BIG TIME

I recently made a trip to see 185668232 do a show at the Troc Balcony. The band braved and went forward even though their bass player had to pull out at the last minute due to a family emergency. After doing a lot of shows at private house venues, this was The Big Time! 185668232 was headlining a bunch of five acts at The Troc! In spite of that unforeseen circumstance, the evening went well.

The band played songs from their new cd "21st Century American Entertainment", which was sort of released to the public that night, March 6. I say "sort of" because it's still a work in progress. Some of the songs are still being worked on and will come out in an official official real release projected to be in May.

Mar 11 : "Fingers to Your Arms" - Voletta

New Music / Freshly Written & Recently Released (2011)

What a bad week that started out to be, but I think it was the music that finally turned it around. The next night I went to North Star and saw Voletta, which was my second time seeing them.

They played music from their 2010 cd, also named "Voletta", as well as some from their new cd, "Soft Focus", which was just released this past October. I've been listening to the new cd over the past few days and know that Philly shoegaze is alive and well.

Feb 29 : "You're Already Gone" - The Dig

Last week I braved something, I don't know whether it was a little case of food poisoning or a bug, but something was keeping me feeling not too good last week. So it was a relief and a good change of pace to have a chance to go out and hear some music last Thursday. The Dig, one of my favorites from New York came to town and did a good show at Kung Fu.

They played some familiar songs and also got the audience psyched up about their new album, which has been completed, but not quite yet released. The new album is titled "Midnight Flowers".

Their previous album, "Electric Toys", was released in 2010. Current song playing is "You're Already Gone", which is from "Electric Toys".

Feb 18 : "This Is ... (MEMORY TAPES remix)" - Instamatic

A week or two ago I had a great time going out with David and Pat to see Instamatic at Milkboy. I caught a little of one of their previous shows, but this show at Milkboy was exceptional. Powerful synth backdrops with intriguing and intelligent melodic lines.

And Instamatic will be doing another show tonight! This time they'll be playing at The Level Room on Market Street.

Feb 10 : "There are things I can do by Myself" - Sunshine Superman

I had first seen Sunshine Superman when they played at Girard Fest / Fire Fest back in the Fall. I liked their sound and was interested in hearing them again, so I headed up to North Star when I saw they were going to be playing a couple weeks ago.

And the show happened to coincide with a new music video the band created, which happens to be right here! :) … Current video playing right here on my blog page is "There are things I can do by Myself" by Philly band Sunshine Superman. An interesting feature of the video is to be able to "watch" Valentina sing the various parts simultaneously.
